AT LAST - SOMETHING WORTH CATCHING
Joy West
Sometimes it’s hard to catch a break. In the past several years Napa Valley has had its shares of catching fires and, as part of a world-wide pandemic of catching COVID in all of its forms.
Then, and not a minute too soon, along comes something definitely worth catching.
Mustard, that yellow diminutive flower that graces our vineyards and hills and even yards is back again this time of year with all the happiness and innocence and joy inherent in it.
Who wouldn’t want to catch hold of those feelings in the waking stretches of what seems like a way too long winter’s hibernation?
Jessel Miller was ignited in the best of ways with the news that the historic Napa Valley Mustard Festival was being refurbished and rebranded into an event with as much heart as ever but smaller and more befitting a bruised world—and a community—finding its footing in the midst of change. She began envisioning a cause for celebration, an event well worth Instilling a sense of normalcy and renewal, a haven of replenishment for families, couples, children, and friends.
And to know Jessel is to know that her enthusiasm for the panoramic views of these happy little flowers, for the rich heritage of celebrating their arrival, and for the joy of having something GOOD to celebrate is contagious. Dozens of artists and crafts makers have caught her excitement, producing colorful, vibrant pieces on canvases and paper large and small, in wall weavings and beads meticulously strung together to form bedazzling jewelry, in fabric dyed one-of-a-kind wearables, and in hand-crafted basketry. Photographers have caught her optimism, submitting lively and intense and leisurely photographs that prove there are so many different, lovely, exhilarating ways to view the world and a simple little yellow flower or the golden sea they form when combined.
Then sprang forth the idea of food trucks and popup tents and Miss Althea from the Napa County Library to host story time from Jessel's beautifully illustrated and written Mustard Series trilogy.
But wait. There's more. Because Jessel is one of those "the more, the merrier" modern day Pied Pipers. She contacted Bougetz Winery right in back of her. Now Bougetz will feature a red wine labeled with her Mustard Celebration painting. Delicious pouring and tasting are promised by Bougetz.
And what is a mustard celebration without…mustard? In jars. Five different delectable types with that rich, merry Jessel Miller label on each one.
Internationally known Gordon Huether has joined the merry band, featuring his unique Dichroic Glass Piece at Jessel Gallery.
A Student Show featuring works of Jessel Miller’s Students enrich the walls of the gallery classroom.
And Jessel herself? As well as exposing everyone of those artists to her unique vision of all things mustard, she has been creating her own joy pieces: inspired landscapes and abstracts, as well as an array of art-filled products.
The result is a beautiful, uplifting eye candy of a show, The Napa Valley Mustard Celebration. You can catch it at the Jessel Gallery from February 1 through March 31, with special events on February 19 and 20 and March 12 When little else seems to be these days, this is something well worth catching.

Yellow is the color of the mind, intellect, and optimism
Yellow is one of the happiest colors of the spectrum. It has an illuminating essence, it is fun, and it has some level of innocence resonating strongly with children. Yellow is an upbeat and cheerful hue that is enlightening. It evokes pleasant feelings, captivating and charming with ease. It’s an effective communicator and provides clarity. |
