The Napa Valley Mustard Celebration, founded in 2022, is the inspired creation of Jessel Miller — the only artist ever commissioned to design five distinct posters for the original Napa Valley Mustard Festival, which ran until 2011. That earlier event was a multimillion-dollar extravaganza, featuring six major happenings during the shoulder season from January through March.
Jessel’s new incarnation reimagines the celebration with a broader, more inclusive mission: to uplift and support every business in the valley. Through the NVMC website, any local business is invited to create and list their own event — making this the first time in Napa Valley history that communities from American Canyon to Calistoga are actively participating in a unified seasonal showcase. Anchored by featured events like the Kickoff at Silverado Resort and the Mustard Finale at Copia, the celebration unfolds over three months, welcoming both locals and visitors to experience the valley’s art, food, wine, and community spirit. Jessel, who owns and operates the largest and longest-running gallery in Napa Valley, has dedicated over 40 years to nurturing what she calls the HeART of the Community. Her vision for the Mustard Celebration continues to grow, with hopes that it will become internationally recognized as the longest and most widely supported art, food, and wine festival in the world. While most festivals span just a weekend or a few days, the Napa Valley Mustard Celebration stands apart — a rare and remarkable tribute to the season, the land, and the people who make it thrive. |
Legend has it that the first mustard plants arrived in Napa Valley in the 1800s when Jesuit priests traveled California. They scattered the mustard seeds as they traveled across what is now Napa Valley. |
